YEP Job Clubs will provide support to young people in making career choices

Sarajevo, 15 March 2010

In near future YEP will consider opening Job Clubs within several branch offices of RS Employment Bureau and Federal Employment Institute, mainly in Tuzla and Banjaluka. Job Clubs will support young people in finding their first-time employment, but also in changing their career. Job Club leaders support young people in considering their strengths and weaknesses and choosing the right career path.
Here is an example provided by e-kapija, about ways in which young people can be motivated for self-analysis guided by Job Club leaders.
There are many reasons why people want to change career and seek a completely new career path. Maybe you do not like your job anymore, or you think you could grow more somewhere else, or you have lost your job and cannot find new employment.
Nevertheless, career change can be long and tiresome process, so you should keep the job you have now as long as possible. Obviously this does not apply if you have not saved enough money during your previous employment, which you could spend while you are between jobs. In both cases, if you wish to change career, you need to:
a) Determine what you want and need
Firstly, you have to have a clear idea of what you want to achieve with the career change. Analyze your professional interests, but consider your private obligations, especially if you have a family. Consider the positive and negative sides of your current job and try to conclude what you would like to stay the same and what to change.
b) Determine your skills now
During many years of work, you have probably gained many transferable skills, such as management skills, time-keeping, multitasking, computer use etc. In order to determine your skills, you must have a broader picture of your previous employment. Remind yourself of all previous engagements, including the work place, school and note down every skill you could not have gained at your current job. Make a list of those skills and include them in your CV.
c) Discover hidden talents
Just as you cannot use all of your body muscles in a sport, at the same way one job cannot completely use all of your potentials. No matter how long and how successful you were at some job, it is likely that you have some talents you haven’t discovered yet.
d) Explore the most interesting options
After you have discovered what could be your talents, it is time to look for a new career. As we already pointed out, that can get complicated since some options need to be brought to a minimum. Since you are seeking a new employment at the same time, and also pleasure at work, start considering the options that seem most challenging. However, be realistic. There are many jobs for which you cannot apply without adequate experience; hence you need to study the entire career branch, in order to determine whether your knowledge, skills and talents are competent for the job. Having high expectations that lead to disappointment can significantly hurt your motivation.
e) Explore alternative options
Do not limit yourself with undesirable jobs and growing economic branches. Be practical and think of opportunities. A career that would suit you most, on other hand, may not be what most job seekers search, which decreases the number of other candidates and increases your chances for getting the job.
By using these tips you can simply discover in what direction you want to build your new career, but have in mind that career change is just half way through. If you want full success, you must build long-term career development plan, define your personal goals you want to achieve with new career and time-frame in which you want your goals to be achieved.
